Dear Parents,

I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself as the new teacher in Giraffes class. I have taught in Hull schools for over twenty years and have recently worked at Newington in the Foundation Stage for a term. It is great to be back at Newington again and I look forward to meeting parents over the next few weeks and getting to know the children better.
Mrs Fiona Atkin
Please read our newsletter, which is attached below, to find out what we are learning this term.
In Giraffes our topic work for this term is the Rainforest.

We will be locating rainforests on a map, understanding why the rainforest is important for us in the UK and focusing on the habitats of the animals within the rainforest.

We are hoping to adopt an animal from the WWF to help us understand more about endangered animals. To do this we will hold a 'sponsored spell'.

Year 3 is an enjoyable year and this year will be no different. The children will learn many new skills including learning some French phrases.
Our first Science topic this year is 'Animals including Humans' this will link really well to our rainforest topic. We will also focus on some of the plants that grow within a rainforest.
In PE we will have a Freddy Fit focus for the first half term. The children will take part in dances and activities to help them become more aware of the impact exercise has on their health and bodies.
Homework will be handed out on a Thursday to be returned on a Tuesday (unless we are taking part in a larger scale project). You can also help your child by reading daily and signing your child's home - school reading record. Also by practising the 3,4 and 8 times tables with your child. If you would like any extra spellings or reading books please come and see me.
This term is going to be very exciting and we can't wait to start our learning journey in our new class.
Miss Watkinson

We have had some animals visit the Giraffe class as part of our Rainforest work. The children were able to hold the animals and ask questions so they could find out lots of information. We really enjoyed the visit and the children handled snakes, tarantulas, lizards, frogs and even rats. Some of the adjectives used were 'slimy', 'scary', 'cute', 'smooth', 'smelly' and 'rough'.
Here are some pictures of the children enjoying the event.

We have been keeping fit in our PE lessons and learning what happens to our bodies when we exercise.
Using the Freddy Fit machine and activities the children have taken part in a number of one minute activities to make their hearts beat faster.
We also looked at why a warm up and cool down were so important to us.
Here are some pictures showing the fun we had.

Today we learnt how to use the column method to subtract.
We are using 3 digit numbers!
Here is us practising before we used our books.
