Talk for Writing

We are delighted to announce that Newington Academy is now a "Talk for Writing" school.

We are involving the children in a ground breaking new project created by Pie Corbett which aims to improve the children's reading and writing levels across the school.  The children are loving this new approach towards what, for some, is a difficult task.

Talk for Writing is powerful because it enables children to imitate the language they need for a particular topic orally before reading and analysing it and then writing their own version. It builds on 3 key stages:-
  1. Imitation - once the teacher has  established a creative context and an engaging start a typical Talk for Writing unit would begin with some engaging activities warming up the tune of the text as well as the topic focused on.  This helps children to internalise the pattern of the language required.
  2. Innovation - once the children have internalised the text then they are ready to start innovating on the pattern of the text.
  3. Intervention - the teacher now has the opportunity to assess the children's work and to adapt their planning in light of what the children can actually do.

Talk for Writing in the Early Years

In the Foundation Stage we learn a new Talk for Writing every half term linked to our topic. This can be a non-fiction or fiction text. We also have daily 'Story Invention' sessions to develop the children's imagination and language skills.
